05 June- 2018: Hike To Kalapatthar & Trek Back To Pheriche,
Today I was reluctantly woken up at 2 am.. after a quick cup of tea we headed out into the cold. The hike to Kalapathar in the dark was amazing! It was pitch black except for the shinning stars and moon. I’ve never seen such a beautiful night sky. The reflection of the moon on the snowy mountain took my breath away. As we climbed, a sheet of fog overtook us, and nothing could be seen.
I felt a sense of closeness to my fellow hikers – it was like nothing existed beyond us and the trail. Suddenly, the fog cleared away; the sun creeped out and illuminated the mountains in a warm yellow hue. Mt Everest was clearly visible and we enjoyed taking pictures. We climbed to the top of the cliff for a 360 view of the mountains that surrounded us. At the edge of the cliff we were able to look down on vividly blue glacial lakes… through the fog, I was even able to see a double rainbow! The view is one that I will never forget. During our descent we collected Himalayan salt rocks as souvenirs for this spectacular morning.
After returning to the tea house in Gorakshep, we ate breakfast and packed up for our trek back to Periche. The hike down was much easier.. we had lunch in thukula, the same place we had our lunch.. it was a place of smiles and laughter as we swapped descriptions of how the mountains move us.
